In 2001 Kozameh published 259 saltos, uno immortal. This English translation by Clare Sullivan captures the essence of the author's fragmented yet poetic vision. The novel portrays Kozameh's experiences during her exile, and takes place in California and Mexico, where she lived after fleeing Argentina. In this novel she continues to experiment with style. Like a painting by Picasso, the work takes on meaning through its very fragmentary nature. It is written in sections ("leaps") that appear to be disconnected; however, there are threads of continuity that run through the book. Anecdotes, reflections, and characters are loosely woven together throughout the work, with the common denominator being the experience of exile, the feelings of estrangement, rupture and sadness, as well as the excitement of the new adventure. She names the novel "Leaps" because it reflects the emotional ups and downs experienced by people living in exile. This work is at once serious, playful and poetic. 259 Leaps, the Last Immortal pushes the definition of novel into a new realm.—Gwendolyn Díaz, Ph.D., St. Mary's University
