FOREWORD, by Marian Haddad
It was seven years ago when I was first blessed by Annie Parker's work and spirit. Annie was a sixth grader when she offered up the first draft of her beautifully wrought "Geneseo Road," which is nestled here in Remembrance of Rain. I recall thinking as she read it in front of her peers, that here was an old soul, a voice that had somehow lived far beyond its years. It was clear that Annie thought in rhythmic measures, in soothing and particular colors, and that her poetry was highly mellifluous.
Attentive to the world around her, Annie somehow prays through her writing. She carries that Whitmanian sense of awe and gratitude for all things around. Like Mary Oliver, Annie's attention to the natural world is constant; her expression of this is both precise and innovative.
What makes Annie's poetry are the following: a heightened listening, keen observations, and coming to all things in the natural world with a reverence for all. She practices the photographic eye that William Carlos Williams and Robert Henri, the visual artist, speak of, the eye that is ready for the surprise or that finds the subject in her search and through her seeing.
It is my great honor to help introduce Annie's work into the world. And I thank Bryce Milligan for seeing the worth in the work. I have observed Annie's voice grow and gain a firm, yet quiet, authority. I knew, on that day I first heard Annie read "Geneseo Road," that her work would make its way into the world, and that the world would be enriched by it.
