Incarcerated for more than three years as a political prisoner—first in the sótano, the basement of Rosario's Police Headquarters, and then in Villa Devoto prison—Alicia Kozameh fled to the U.S. in 1980. After her return to Argentina, the publication of her first novel, Pasos bajo el agua (1987), again brought her to the attention of a repressive government. She has lived in Los Angeles, California, since 1988. Ostrich Legs was first published in German as Straussenbeine (Milena Verlag, 1996), to critical acclaim, then in its original Spanish as Patas de avestruz. A masterpiece of introspective, linguistically innovative fiction, Ostrich Legs is about the relationship between two sisters, one severely handicapped, the other gifted yet overlooked. It is also, of course, a metaphor for the abuse of power in Argentina.
