Performance Notes from Fred Ho
- Track 1: I quote from Rahsaan Roland Kirk's classic "Volunteer Slavery" in my solo bari sax intro. The tune behind Ral is a combination of a fast 7/4 and 11/4 meter with some additives thrown in. Kirk, the blind multi-instrumental virtuoso who rejected the term "jazz" for his own sobriquet, "Black classical music," was an iconoclast of the '60s and '70s, who I was fortunate to hear and meet before he died. With marathon-like stamina, Kirk played several horns simultaneously and reclaimed obscure woodwind horns such as the manzello and stritch. Both an "inside" and "outside" player steeped in blues and gospel traditions, we pay homage to this late, great master and iconoclast.
- Track 4: I play a 3/4 or 7/8 meter dirge rhythm interspersed with the popular Chinese "Wong Fei-hung" martial arts anthem.
- Track 8: "History Crying for a Change" is one of my earliest compositions; it is a poignant "cry" for revolution.
- Track 12: Based on an opening 11/8 ostinato, I quote from the legendary Afro-Latin song "Manteca" as well as a 6/8 blues I composed entitled "Free New Afrika! Boogaloo" and "Big Red! (for Malcolm X and Mao Zedong)".
