When this book was published in 2000 by M & A Editions, Brigid Milligan was described as one of a new breed of scientist-poets. Mi'ja, Never Lend Your Mop was published during her senior year in high school, and Milligan remains (as of 2010) the youngest author to be named a finalist for the Tomás Rivera Award for Mexican American Young Adult Literature. As a high school student, she was the recipient of numerous awards in science and poetry, including semi-finalist status in the Intel Science Talent Search, several grand prizes in the Alamo Regional Science and Engineering Fair and—two years in a row—first grand prize in the Palo Alto College Ides of March poetry contest, where she was also awarded the "Ana Castillo Prize" for Latina writing. She grew up in San Antonio, Texas. Milligan was a recipient of the 1999-2000 literature/journalism prize from the Hispanic Heritage Awards Foundation. She subsequently graduated from Wellesley College and NYU. Milligan is also the primary translator of Marjorie Agosin's El angel de la memoria / The Angel of Memory. Currently she works in public relations in New York City.
