Alex Stein author's photo

Alex Stein is the author of Dark Optimism, a book of short fictions, and The Life and Art of Josan, a collection of drawings inhabited by poems. He came to the vocation of writing first as a newspaper columnist, mostly documenting the bohemian milieu of artists and zealots of that time. He holds a Ph.D. in Literature from the University of Denver, an honor he achieved too far along in life for it to have given him much sense of personal achievement, but an experience of institutionalized scholarship that, unlike previous ventures into academia, offered him much in the way of illuminated moments, and of fundamentally sane human interaction: two things for which he is always, anytime, and anywhere he encounters them, a surprised and grateful recipient. He makes his living working for a university library in Boulder, Colorado, where he has lived and sometimes even thrived, for 25 years. He has two children, boys, whose characters he very much encourages and admires.
