Imelda Zapata García, born in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, was raised in the west side of San Antonio, Texas. She was the "Green Chapulin" of the literary performance art group, La Banda Feroztica, for which she performed, wrote, designed and produced costumes. Zapata García was a founding member of Chicano Arts Theatre and Tovia theatre, with whom she acted, designed and produced costumes, sets, puppets and props (with the help of her husband and four children) for three decades. She is a poet and writer who has studied with Rodolfo Anaya. She first published poetry in El Caracol: la revista de la raza, in the 1970s. Zapata García has also written and sold work to Harcourt-Brace Educational Corp. She is currently working on an historical account of Teatro Chicano in San Antonio.
