Victoria García-Zapata
Victoria García-Zapata (formerly Garcia-Galaviz) won first place in the regionally televised (PBS) 1995 poetry slam sponsored by the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. Also through the Guadalupe, she has studied creative writing in master’s classes with Pat Mora, Gary Soto, Joy Harjo, and Sandra Cisneros. Her work has appeared in several literary magazines, in This Promiscuous Light: Young Women Poets of San Antonio (1996), and in ¡Floricanto Sí! A Collection of Latina Poetry (Penguin, 1998). García-Zapata was the subject of a feature story on new Latina poets in the San Antonio Express News, and has been interviewed on National Public Radio. She is a student at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, where she is studying literature and creative writing.
